Looking after yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically after having a baby is very important because childbirth and the early weeks of parenting place huge demands on your body and mind. When you care for yourself, it helps both you and your baby thrive. 🌱👶
1. Physical recovery
Your body needs time to heal after pregnancy and birth. This can include recovery from:
Vaginal birth or a Cesarean section
Hormone changes
Blood loss and fatigue
Breastfeeding demands
Poor milk supply
Nipple & Breast health
2. Mental health
After birth, hormone levels drop quickly, which can affect mood. Many parents experience Baby blues, and some develop Postpartum depression or Postpartum anxiety.
Looking after your mental health—by talking to someone, resting when possible, and asking for support—helps you:
Cope with stress
Enjoy bonding with your baby
Prevent more serious mental health difficulties.
3. Emotional wellbeing
Becoming a parent is a major life transition. You might feel:
Overwhelmed
Lonely
Doubtful about your abilities
Extremely happy and emotional all at once
Taking time for yourself, connecting with supportive people, and being kind to yourself helps you adjust to your new role.
4. Better care for your baby
When you are well, it becomes easier to:
Respond to your baby’s needs
Build a strong attachment
Have patience and energy
Your wellbeing directly affects your baby’s development and sense of security.
5. Preventing burnout
Newborn care often means little sleep and constant attention. Without self-care, parents can become exhausted and emotionally drained. Small breaks, accepting help, and maintaining healthy routines can protect against burnout. Rest, good nutrition, and gentle movement help your body regain strength and reduce complications.
✅ In simple terms: When you look after yourself, you are better able to look after your baby. Your health, mood, and energy create the foundation for your child’s early development.
This whole concept of postpartum retreats was given to me by a special lady, an excellent Lactation consultant from the Midlands in Ireland Patricia Martenson. Patricia has been a great supporter of The homeopathic Breast cream also… which is available to purchase here at Robin Hill Clinic. So Thank you Patricia.

1. Practical postpartum self-care tips
Mental self-care 🧠
Talk about how you feel. Share your thoughts with a partner, friend, or healthcare professional.
Lower expectations. The house does not need to be perfect—focus on recovery and bonding.
Limit isolation. Even short conversations or messages with supportive people can help.
Take small breaks. A shower, short walk, or quiet tea break can reset your mood.
Seek professional help if needed. Conditions like Postpartum Depression or Postpartum Anxiety are common and treatable.
Emotional self-care ❤️
Acknowledge your emotions. Feeling happy, overwhelmed, tired, or unsure is normal.
Give yourself grace. You are learning and adjusting to a new role.
Celebrate small wins. Feeding your baby, resting, or getting outside are all successes.
Stay connected. Support groups or other parents can help you feel understood.
Physical self-care 💪
Rest whenever possible. Sleep when your baby sleeps if you can.
Eat nourishing meals. Your body needs energy to recover and, if applicable, to breastfeed.
Drink plenty of water. Hydration supports healing and milk production.
Move gently. Light stretching or walking can support recovery once medically safe.
Support pelvic recovery. Conditions such as Diastasis Recti or Pelvic Floor Dysfunction can occur postpartum and may benefit from professional guidance.
2. Signs you should seek professional help
Some emotional or physical changes are normal after birth, but certain symptoms should not be ignored.
Mental and emotional warning signs
Seek help if you experience:
Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
Severe anxiety or panic attacks
Feeling disconnected from your baby
Intense irritability or anger
Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby
These may be signs of Postpartum Depression, Postpartum Anxiety, or other postpartum mental health conditions.

Mums testimonial
“I came in to Robin Hill tired & anxious. My lactation consultant suggested that it might be good to take a couple of days out and just relax. I was having trouble with my milk supply and no matter what I did, nothing was helping with my milk supply. I was thinking of giving up breastfeeding. She gave me some samples of the homeopathic breast screen which worked wonders at healing my cracked nipples and my partner suggested that it would be a good idea to have a few days to ourselves.. My parents very kindly gave us some money towards it.
I must say it was not expensive for the care & TLC we got. Deirdre & her lovely team were amazing.
We arrived Friday afternoon and I started with an Acupuncture treatment with Deirdre which made a huge difference to the breast milk supply. She also gave me some of her amazing Homeopathic Breast cream and some oral homeopathic medicine. We went out for dinner the three of us to a restaurant in Cobh that gave us 10% off because we were staying at Robin Hill. Next day Saturday both myself and my husband had an amazing head to toe aromatherapy massage with Margaret who has some pair of hands on her. I lounged in bed a lot of the time we went for a lovely walk down by the water. My husband attended the yoga class on Saturday morning.Because we were calmer the baby was like an angel totally content. We stayed three nights and I can honestly say I came home a new woman. I’m definitely going back there just to savour the peace and quiet and beauty of this lovely old house. I highly recommend new mums like myself to come and avail of this bespoke retreat.
Next time we may bring the dog as they have a pet friendly little wooden cabin.
Thanks Deirdre with love Carla ,Owen & Baby Lucy. xx”
